Alexander McQueen Exhibit Is Eighth Most Popular Met Show Ever

Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty"Savage Beauty" attracted 661,509 visitors over a three-month period.

Alexander McQueen is still drawing crowds more than a year after his death.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art's Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty exhibit ranks as the eighth most visited show in its 141-year history, the museum said Monday.

It drew 661,509 visitors during its run from May 4 to Aug. 7.

"We are enormously gratified that visitors turned out in record numbers to view this powerful exhibition of McQueen's work," said Met director and CEP Thomas P. Campbell. "This was an elegant tribute to the designer's artistry, and we are proud to have shared it with such a broad audience, eager to experience the breadth of his genius.

Additionally, more than 23,000 new members joined the museum during the retrospective, double the number of the same period last year.

Exhibition catalogue sold more than 100,000 copies to date and related merchandise in the Met shops --such as armadillo shoe ornaments, crystal skull paperweights, and tartan purses -- sold out several times and were repeatedly ordered, notes the museum.

McQueen committed suicide in April 2010 at the age of 40.

His label continues on under creative director Sarah Burton, who designed Kate Middleton's royal wedding dress.
