NEW DELHI – Bollywood has a new fan in Lady Gaga.
In her first appearance on an Indian talk show, the flamboyant pop diva said, “I have seen a few Bollywood films and I love how theatrical they are, and that’s my favorite part - that they are so surreal and full of fantasy.”
She was a guest of India's Most Desirable that airs on News Corp.'s Star network channel Star One, hosted by 64-year-old former actress Simi Garewal.
Adding that she loved Bollywood for “its heightened sense of reality and surreal genius,” Lady Gaga said she was looking forward to coming to India in October, which could see the 25-year-old star on a promotional visit getting to know some of Indian filmdom's reigning stars in addition to sampling Indian cuisine.
“I love Indian food. I love spicy curry. I used to eat Indian food in New York,” she told Garewal in an hour-long interview pre-recorded in Singapore that aired Sunday, in a departure from the celebrity talk show host's usual style of inviting guests to interact with a Mumbai studio audience.
“She had 15 interviews lined up the day I interviewed her and she changed her hairdo and makeup for every single one of them,” Garewal told her audience.
Dressed in black with a neon green hair-do, fashion icon Lady Gaga complimented Garewal – a veteran Bollywood actress turned TV presenter who usually dresses in white -- for her fashion sense, “You are so stunningly gorgeous. We all gasped when you walked in.”
Referring to recent local reports about Lady Gaga not doing a concert in India over monetary issues, Garewal said that was untrue and that Lady Gaga “was sad at the reports because money has never been a criterion for her.” As the singer said in the interview, “I don't have money – whatever I have I spend on my shows.”
But despite her global stardom, Lady Gaga confessed, “I’m lonely and married to loneliness... But artists are supposed to be lonely.”
Garewal also gifted the Grammy-winning star a lehenga - a traditional gold and sequined Indian skirt -- and a DVD of some popular Bollywood songs by top choreographer/film-maker Farah Khan, who has choreographed Bollywood-inspired performances for Shakira and Kylie Minogue. “Oh my God I would love to see this!’ said Lady Gaga. “I’m going to watch this tonight!’”
Meanwhile, unconfirmed reports indicate that another talk show Koffee With Karan – hosted by top Bollywood director Karan Johar which also airs on the Star network – could feature Paris Hilton in an upcoming episode.
