The Eat Sheet: Larry Bell Talks About His New Restaurant, Larry's in Venice Beach

Larry BellLarry Bell, photo by Dustin DowningThe artist also reveals he'll open a show with previously unseen works Oct. 3.

The door is open to artist Larry Bell's studio just a block from the sand in Venice Beach. Wearing a hat, his signature look, and puffing one of his favorite Nicaraguan Oliva cigars, the painter/sculptor/collagist is explaining how he came to have one of the neighborhood's hottest new restaurants named after him.

The spot is three-week-old Larry's, a laid-backcafe opened by the Hotel Erwin, a mere block from Bell’s studio. The tapas-style food, quite a cut above the typical fare at Windward and Pacific Avenues, is by chef Brendan Collins of critically-beloved Waterloo & City restaurant in Mar Vista.

"It might be sort of a quid pro quo," says the 71-year-old Bell, one of the pioneers of California's Light and Space art movement, along with Robert Irwin and James Turrell. He's had a studio in Venice since the mid-sixties and, along the way, stayed countless times at the hotel, which was formerly a Best Western called the Marina Pacific. When the Joie de Vivre hotel group bought the property a couple years back, they needed a new name. Co-owner Erwin Sokol, a longtime friend, asked Bell along to one of the meetings.

"I didn’t like any of the names and I just spoke up and said I think we should call it the Hotel Erwin cause Erwin built it. And that became the name," says Bell, who splits his time between Venice and a place in Taos, New Mexico.

Sure enough, Sokol turned around and asked if Bell would lend his name to the hotel’s latest venture — "If I'd design the logo," says Bell. It's right there at the entrance to Larry's, a caricature in neon of the artist, complete with hat and cigar. A space above the bar is decorated with a collection of his cigar boxes and hats as well.

Bell's only demand? "I was quite frank that it had to be good if I was going to invite my friends." Bell's old pal Ed Moses has already been in several times. In the past three years though, his friends Robert Graham and Dennis Hopper both passed away. Recalls Bell: "Dennis was one of the first movie people ever to buy one of my works in the early 60s." Graham's former studio and residence — which his widow, actress Anjelica Huston currently has on the market for $16.8 million — sits right across from the restaurant.

The seminal Venice artist is about to inaugurate another space as well. He's recently rented a space right next to his studio where he’ll mount a new solo show, opening Oct. 3. The artist will exhibit some never-before-seen work from early in his career. It's timed to coincide with Pacific Standard Time, the sweeping Getty-funded arts initiative that will see forty concurrent exhibitions open this fall, all focusing on the influence of California in art and design. He's not benefiting from the Getty's largesse though. "I'm doing it on my own. It's a roll of the dice, bro."

Mark Wahlberg Wants a Reality Series About His New Restaurant

Mark Wahlberg"Maybe I'll be the 'Charlie's Angels' of reality TV," he says of the idea.

Just a week after it was revealed that Mark Wahlberg was opening up a new, 4,300-sq. ft. restaurant in Boston's Hingham Shipyard called Wahlburgers, the Entourage producer and actor took it one step further: He wants a reality series too.

COVER STORY: 'Entourage' Secrets From the Boys of Summer

Wahlberg, along with his brothers, are mulling the idea of filming an unscripted show following the opening of their burger eatery. But there may be a catch, if the idea comes to fruition.

"Maybe I'll be the Charlie's Angels of reality TV," Wahlberg told E! Online recently. "You'll hear my voice, but obviously it's something that we'd want to control in every aspect and produce and make sure that we were doing something really quality."

Wahlberg also shared that he and his brothers may
at some point or another" launch their own clothing line, in addition to "a health and wellness business that will help people first and foremost feel good, exercise, eat right and then look good."

The Wahlberg family has an Italian restaurant in Boston called Alma Nove.

The Eat Sheet: Jamie Oliver To Open Restaurant in Los Angeles (Report)

Jamie Oliver The Naked Chef is said to be planning an L.A. restaurant, while his campaign to bring healthier food to the city's schools appears to have made an impact

Eater LA is reporting that Naked Chef Jamie Oliver plans to open a restaurant in the Los Angeles area. It would be his first-ever in the U.S.

The best-selling cookbook author and cooking show star already owns and operates 20 Jamie's Italian restaurants in the U.K., as well as Fifteen London, which has an apprentice program that recruits unemployed and under-qualified young people and trains them to become chefs.

His ABC show Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution, produced by Ryan Seacrest, which promoted healthy food in schools, received poor ratings during its second L.A.-based season and will not return for a third. Oliver clashed with Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) officials while filming after they refused to let his cameras into schools. He was among many critics of the district's food offerings who called for a ban of flavored milk.

As the Los Angeles Times reported on August 29, LAUSD is now intent on remaking its school lunch programs. "In coming weeks, the district will do away with canned and frozen fruits and vegetables, chicken nuggets and corn dogs and begin incorporating more locally grown produce into the daily fare," writes the paper's Mary MacVean.

Oliver's show won the Emmy for best reality program at the 2010 awards.

Restaurant News: Chris Weitz’s 5 Favorite Spots for Mexican Food in L.A.

Director Chris Weitz shot his new drama, A Better Life, released June 24, on location primarily in and around East Los Angeles. The film tells the story of a gardener and illegal immigrant (Demian Bichir) who is striving to keep his teenage son (Jose Julian) away from gangs. The movie follows the two as the father purchases a pickup truck to get ahead in business only to see it stolen.

"It's an adventure about the father and son learning to speak to each other and getting to know each other as they go in search of this truck," says Weitz.

During the course of the 38-day shoot, Weitz, the director of The Twilight Saga: New Moon and About A Boy (with his brother Paul Weitz), also discovered some of the area’s best places to eat, from authentic Mexican joints to one of the city’s most inventive Nuevo Latin restaurants. Here are his top five spots to hit when exploring the Mexican cuisine of L.A.:

 1. La Parrilla Mexican restaurant in Boyle Heights: "La Parrilla means the grill and there are two things that are great. The fresh guacamole and the great regional music. The last time I was at La Parrilla, there was a man with a beautiful voice who played the viehuela, which is sort of like a giant ukulele or a shrimpy guitar. It makes a beautifully  plaintive sound," says Weitz. 2126 Cesar Chavez Blvd., Boyle Heights, CA 90033

2. Rivera restaurant in downtown Los Angeles: "On the upscale side, we had our first actor and head of department get-together at this new wave Mexican restaurant. It's got fantastic, fantastic food and they also have probably the best selection of tequilas in L.A. Our star Demian Bichir's favorite tequila is Seven Rivers and they have that. So we had a bit of that and a good night was had by all." 1050 S. Flower St., Los Angeles, CA 90015

3. La Casita Mexicana restaurant in Bell: "They specialize in chile rellenos and they make it with a pomegranate sauce. It's kind of a white sauce with pomegranate and it's absolutely fantastic." 4030 E. Gage Ave., Bell, CA 90201

4. King Taco in Boyle Heights: “It’s the classic taco experience. The tacos pastor and carne asada are great and some of the distinctive things are the lengua which is tongue and head cheese and all kinds of things which sound really scary but are worth trying. I hadn't had lengua before and the experience was very good.” 2400 E. Cesar Chavez, Ave., Boyle Heights, CA 90033

5. Homegirl Café in Chinatown: "It's part of Homeboy Industries [a jobs and education and program that assists at-risk and formerly-gang-involved youth]. The salsa is really, really good and they just started selling it at Ralphs." 130 W. Bruno St., Los Angeles, CA 90012
