The Eat Sheet: Larry Bell Talks About His New Restaurant, Larry's in Venice Beach

Larry BellLarry Bell, photo by Dustin DowningThe artist also reveals he'll open a show with previously unseen works Oct. 3.

The door is open to artist Larry Bell's studio just a block from the sand in Venice Beach. Wearing a hat, his signature look, and puffing one of his favorite Nicaraguan Oliva cigars, the painter/sculptor/collagist is explaining how he came to have one of the neighborhood's hottest new restaurants named after him.

The spot is three-week-old Larry's, a laid-backcafe opened by the Hotel Erwin, a mere block from Bell’s studio. The tapas-style food, quite a cut above the typical fare at Windward and Pacific Avenues, is by chef Brendan Collins of critically-beloved Waterloo & City restaurant in Mar Vista.

"It might be sort of a quid pro quo," says the 71-year-old Bell, one of the pioneers of California's Light and Space art movement, along with Robert Irwin and James Turrell. He's had a studio in Venice since the mid-sixties and, along the way, stayed countless times at the hotel, which was formerly a Best Western called the Marina Pacific. When the Joie de Vivre hotel group bought the property a couple years back, they needed a new name. Co-owner Erwin Sokol, a longtime friend, asked Bell along to one of the meetings.

"I didn’t like any of the names and I just spoke up and said I think we should call it the Hotel Erwin cause Erwin built it. And that became the name," says Bell, who splits his time between Venice and a place in Taos, New Mexico.

Sure enough, Sokol turned around and asked if Bell would lend his name to the hotel’s latest venture — "If I'd design the logo," says Bell. It's right there at the entrance to Larry's, a caricature in neon of the artist, complete with hat and cigar. A space above the bar is decorated with a collection of his cigar boxes and hats as well.

Bell's only demand? "I was quite frank that it had to be good if I was going to invite my friends." Bell's old pal Ed Moses has already been in several times. In the past three years though, his friends Robert Graham and Dennis Hopper both passed away. Recalls Bell: "Dennis was one of the first movie people ever to buy one of my works in the early 60s." Graham's former studio and residence — which his widow, actress Anjelica Huston currently has on the market for $16.8 million — sits right across from the restaurant.

The seminal Venice artist is about to inaugurate another space as well. He's recently rented a space right next to his studio where he’ll mount a new solo show, opening Oct. 3. The artist will exhibit some never-before-seen work from early in his career. It's timed to coincide with Pacific Standard Time, the sweeping Getty-funded arts initiative that will see forty concurrent exhibitions open this fall, all focusing on the influence of California in art and design. He's not benefiting from the Getty's largesse though. "I'm doing it on my own. It's a roll of the dice, bro."

Mark Wahlberg"Maybe I'll be the 'Charlie's Angels' of reality TV," he says of the idea.

COVER STORY: 'Entourage' Secrets From the Boys of Summer

Wahlberg, along with his brothers, are mulling the idea of filming an unscripted show following the opening of their burger eatery. But there may be a catch, if the idea comes to fruition.

"Maybe I'll be the Charlie's Angels of reality TV," Wahlberg told E! Online recently. "You'll hear my voice, but obviously it's something that we'd want to control in every aspect and produce and make sure that we were doing something really quality."

Wahlberg also shared that he and his brothers may
at some point or another" launch their own clothing line, in addition to "a health and wellness business that will help people first and foremost feel good, exercise, eat right and then look good."

Criticisms About Kim Kardashian Wedding Surface

Kim Kardashian"I guess we'll see if Kim Kardashian's marriage lasts longer than the HP touch pad," one Twitter user wrote.

Chatter on Saturday about Kim Kardashian's wedding to New Jersey Nets basketball player Kris Humphries had some comparing the Santa Barbara nuptials to that of the Royal Wedding between Kate Middleton and Prince William earlier this year. The latter was broadcast live worldwide, while Kardashian's wedding will be shown in October on E!.

"As payback for the Royal Wedding, we should interrupt British TV and force them to watch Kim Kardashian's," comedian Andy Borowitz wrote. "People who said prince william & kate middleton's wedding wasn't important are the same people who's talking about kim kardashian's wedding," wrote another.

Modern Family writer Danny Zuker relayed something that was said on Good Morning America. "GMA called Kim Kardashian's wedding "America's Royal Wedding" in case you were looking for something to write in America's obit," he wrote.

A Twitter user compared to the recently discontinud HP Touchpad to Kardashian's wedding: "I guess we'll see if Kim Kardashian's marriage lasts longer than the HP touch pad."

STORY: Kim Kardashian to Have Two Wedding Receptions

E! host and Community star Joel McHale recently appeared on Ryan Seacrest's radio show to tout his new film Spy Kids: All the Time in the World in 4D, and joked about losing an invite to Saturday's Kardashian wedding. “You’re not going to believe this. My invite must have been lost in the mail," he deadpanned. "I thought for a moment that they would have me [at the wedding] but then I did review some of The Soup jokes that we made about them and that took like two days to get through and I realized, ‘Hm. Maybe they’re not going to invite me after all.' "

But McHale joked that had he been given an invite, he'd wear something "really flowing" with "lace."

Author-television writer Caprice Crane wrote on Saturday, "Kim Kardashian is getting married today. Instead of throwing rice, wedding guests are expected to pee on her." Actress Jenna Elfman wrote three days before Kardashian is set to say, "I do," "Per Kim Kardashian's tweets, it seems that everyday is a spa day for her."

Chelsea Lately writer Jeff Wild joked, "Big wedding day for Kim Kardashian! The best man speech tonight will be given by Khloe." A Gifted Man co-star Julie Benz was shocked to learn that the wedding is worth upwards of $30 million. "Insane! I hope they didn't spend that much…," she wrote.

Comedian Hal Sparks wrote, "#worstfeeling is listening to people who actually care about Kim Kardashian's wedding... talk about a Fright Night.. #Dontever mention it."

A user named Casey Hawaii asked, "Am I the only one that thinks its odd that @KimKardashian will be married to a man with the same name as her mom?" Kardashian's mother's name is also Kris.

But not all reaction was negative. Russell Simmons wished Kardashian luck on her big day one night before her wedding to Humphries, "kim and kris are a beautiful, beautiful couple. wishing them more happiness tmw."

Kim Kardashian Wedding Guests: What Attendees Are Saying About the Big Day

Welcoming the new Mr. and Mrs. Humphries were some 450 guests at a lavish private ceremony in Montecito, Calif., and while E! reality star Kim Kardashian and New Jersey Nets forward Kris Humphries forced all attendees to fork over their cell phones during the wedding ceremony and party, many were itching to tweet once they were handed back their devices.

Kim reportedly wore not one, not two, but three Vera Wang gowns throughout the night. Wang tweeted after the event was over, “Wow! @KimKardashian What a joyous, beautiful, magical night! Wishing you and Kris all the blessings in the world xxVera."

Ryan Seacrest, friend and producer of Kardashian’s reality show, Keeping Up With the Kardashians, tweeted, “Beautiful..kim looked regal, a perfect night.I just danced w the whole family."

New Jersey Nets General Manager Billy King was able to celebrate with the couple (despite reports that Humphries’ teammates would not be able to attend the wedding because of the current NBA lockout). "Congrats to Kim and Kris," he tweeted. "Beautiful wedding."

Sugar Ray Leonard’s wife, Bernadette, was a happy tweeter about her goddaughter’s ceremony. Sugar Ray, by the way, is the godfather of Kim’s sister, Khloe Kardashian. The two snapped photos together before the wedding and tweeted them out to fans before their phones were confiscated. "Well all I can say us it was the wedding of the century. Kim was the most beautiful Queen we have ever seen. The reception you'll have to see."

VIDEO: Kim Kardashian Fetes Engagement With Bridal Shower and Engagement Party

Terius Nash, otherwise known as producer The-Dream, only had one thing to say: the bride "LOOKED HOT AS F**K!"

Maria Menounos tweeted a photo of her white dress for the wedding. This wasn’t an attempt at outdoing the bride, she explained to her twitter followers: the dress code for the event was strictly black and white. Like Pippa Middleton at her sister Kate’s royal wedding, Kim’s sisters in the bridal party were also clad head-to-toe in white.

Dina Lohan arrived with daughter Lindsay Lohan, but according to Menounos had a bit of a fashion faux pas: "dina lohan was annoyed by her long dress so I tied it at the bottom.haha macguyver menounos!"

Video from inside the wedding will be featured in a special early edition of E! News on Sunday, August 21 at 6 pm ET/PT.

Hailey Clauson: 5 Things to Know About the Model

Hailey Clauson - 2011The 16-year-old model's parents have sued Urban Outfitters and photographer Jason Lee Parry for using images of Clauson from a photo shoot on t-shirts and other products.

On Thursday, the parents of teen model Hailey Clauson filed a $28 million lawsuit against Urban Outfitters and photographer Jason Lee Parry for using images of their daughter from a photo shoot last year on t-shirts and other products.

"She is posed in a blatantly salacious manner with her legs spread, without a bra, revealing portions of her breasts," the lawsuit said.
But the 16-year-old Clauson isn't a fresh face in the modeling business. She has modeled for companies like Gucci, Jill Stuart and Dsquared2.

Here are five things to know about the young model, caught in the middle of a rich lawsuit:

1. The California native was discovered at an open casting call in Los Angeles just a few years ago and immediately signed with a modeling agency. In an interview earlier this year with New York Magazine, Clauson called the moment "surreal" after revealing that she was "signed on the spot."

2. Clauson began modeling at 14 years old for ad campaigns and appearing in print catalogues for clothing companies like Forever 21, before breaking through and appearing in a feature in Japanese Vogue as its Model of the Month. Shortly thereafter, Clauson would walk in her first fashion shows in the fall of 2010.

3. The young model was caught in some controversy when at 15 years old, Clauson was included in the fashion shows for several major fashion houses, including Diane von Furstenberg, earlier this year. The age limit set for models to walk in fashion shows is 16.

4. So far, Clauson has appeared in several editions of Vogue, including Chinese, Russian, French and Italian. She also has been featured in W, Elle and Zara catalogues.

5. In an interview, Clauson said the most difficult thing about being a model was "waiting for the end product to finally be published," she said. "I'm always anxious and curious as to how the pictures will turn out." But Clauson is taking everything in stride, saying "everything" about being a model is her favorite thing about the job. "I wouldn't have it any other way," she said.

Arnold Schwarzenegger, Maria Shriver The duo, who are in the process of divorcing, present a united front after son Christopher's surfing accident.

After news broke Friday that Maria Shriver and Arnold Schwarzenegger's son Christopher suffered injuries from a serious surfing accident last weekend, the former couple, who are in the midst of a divorce, presented a united front in a joint statement given to The Hollywood Reporter.

"A few days ago our son Christopher suffered an accident at the beach," said the pair. "While it has been a very scary week, Christopher is surrounded by his family and friends."

The 13-year-old boy, who was surfing in Malibu, slammed his face into an object on the beach and was initially thought to be in life-threatening condition according to reports.

But, his status has since improved and he is now expected to make a full recover say Shriver and Schwarzenegger.

"On behalf of our entire family, we want to sincerely thank the paramedics and lifeguards who responded so swiftly as well as the doctors, nurses, emergency room and hospital staff who have cared for our son," they  said in their statement to THR. "They have been extraordinary to him and to us. We thank everyone for their thoughts and prayers and ask for respect and privacy for Christopher and our family."

Shriver filed for divorce from her husband of 25 years on July 1 after news broke that he'd fathered a child (born just one week after Christopher) with their housekeeper.
